Troubled Teen Options

Brat Camps

Some parents with teens diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder get to feeling that it is inevitable that their teenager will end up in brat camps or addicted to drugs. There are a lot of scary stories out there. But attentive parents can find success and such success depends on patience, experimentation and perseverance. For some, success is achieved through medication. “when she was on her medicine, Satterwhite’s friends noticed a difference in her behavior. She didn’t interrupt as much and was able to stay focused in conversations. She found that with medicine, she could concentrate in school and could study effectively. Eventually, she stopped taking Ritalin four times a day and started taking Adderall twice a day.” Often, ADD teens will manage to get through adolescence without medication, finding remedies to their study problems through exercise, nutrition and discipline. “As a child, Pace’s trouble with concentration and reading made him feel like a failure. Between third and fourth grades, he was prescribed reading glasses, which helped, but by then he had fallen behind his classmates.

“My self-image was so founded in failure, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t be successful,” he said. At age 26, Pace read his first book from cover to cover. It was “The Greatest Miracle in the World” by Og Mandino. The book changed his life. […] In Pace’s case, discipline was his medicine. His exercise routine has been invaluable in his battle against ADHD. Pace runs five times a week. He recommends parents who have a child with ADHD keep their child on an exercise regime. “I had to learn that discipline is not a bad word,” he said. (unknown source) By Ann Walker
